About the Role

Energy Central is a media company owned by Smooth that empowers, engages, and educates utility and power professionals. We're growing our content & community team with the addition of an Energy Reporter.
Energy Central's Daily Newsletter lands in the inbox of 120,000 utility and power professionals every weekday morning. As Reporter, you'll be responsible for finding and telling the stories that make it worth reading.
This is a journalism role at its core. You'll track the biggest developments across the energy transition, the future of the grid, energy innovation, the business of power, and the impacts of AI on energy demand. You'll build a source network, get on the phone with experts and insiders, and turn what you learn into sharp, analytical stories that feel essential, not like homework.
You'll work closely with our newsletter editor and a growing content team focused on raising the editorial bar at Energy Central. If you're genuinely curious about where electric power is headed and want to cover it seriously, this role is for you.
Find and tell the big stories that are determining the future of energy, covering the energy transition, the power grid of the future, energy innovation and tech, the business of power, the scaling of next-gen ideas from nuclear to VPPs, workforce and customer changes, the impacts of AI on power demand, and more
Build out a strong source list and develop real relationships with experts, insiders, and industry leaders who can help you get to the story behind the story
Write pithy, analytical newsletter stories that efficiently communicate what you've learned in a way that's clear, interesting, and worth reading
Work with our newsletter editor to meaningfully improve the quality of Energy Central's Daily Newsletter through strong reporting, thoughtful curation, and clever delivery
Help refine and implement Energy Central's editorial voice, one that's friendly, intelligent, curious, and optimistic, across newsletters and social media
A voracious reader of energy news, industry Substacks, and think pieces (if you want to be a good writer, you need to be a good reader)
An energy wonk who loves to learn, talk, and think about the future of electric power, with a strong eye for what really matters
Experience in journalism, media, communications, or related fields with excellent writing skills, attention to detail, and strong organization (experience as a journalist or reporter is a plus)
Comfortable with a little ambiguity and white space: we're building something big, and we're all about bringing creativity to the process
Starting salary: $75,000
Work-From-Home Stipend

Unlimited PTO (mandatory 10 days per year minimum)
Fully remote: you can be based anywhere in North America, with occasional visits to our NYC headquarters
